Yes They Did: Michelle Obama Confirmed As March Vogue Cover Girl

Inaugural Dress and Cover of Vogue?  Jason Wu is Officially a Made Man.

“I’m every wom-an . . .” Professional woman. First Lady.  Mom-in-Chief.  The work-life balance that this particular mother struggles with are so not typical, and now the multi-hypened  Mrs. O has another tag:  Vogue cover girl.

Fashion’s leading lady gets the supermodel treatment on the cover of the March issue, only the second First Lady to grace the cover, after Hillary Clinton.  After titans Anna Wintour and Andre Leon Talley did so much for the Obama campaign, Michelle probably would have found it difficult to say “no,” but thankfully it looks like she did turn down their less than stellar styling attempts. Not a bizarre bolero or cinched shapeless sack in sight.

In the just leaked snap taken by Annie Leibovitz, Michelle bares her enviably toned arms in a magenta Jason Wu dress, the designer who was the plum pick for her inaugural dress.  You can’t buy this kind of advertising!  Inside the mag, Michelle wears a black dress by Narciso Rodriguez, who designed her controversial red-and-black Election Night dress, and matching kitten heels.  It’s like a pitch for a new Bravo reality show:  “Dueling Designers.  Ready, set, sew!  Who will make it to the store racks and who will be cut out of the running?”

And unlike Anna Wintour’s “recession chic” issue where she offered “inspired finds under $500″ (rolls eyes), Michelle shows the budget-conscious sensibility she displayed on the campaign trail, modeling a J.Crew salmon wool cardigan, top, and tweed skirt. The total look is priced under $400 (and the store’s website will be crashing in 3, 2, 1 . . . ).  Maybe getting everyone to shop at the mid-range retailer is the real key to economic stimulus.

Kitten heels, like these from Gabriella Roche, are the perfect compromise between flats and heels.  Choose a pair with a pointy-toe and that gives great toe cleavage to lengthen the leg line.
