ShoeMinx Star Style: Freida Pinto
“Slumdog” Hottie Looks Like a Million Bucks on Awards Season Red Carpet

Everyone loves an underdog. And thanks to the meteoric rise of Slumdog Millionaire as an odds-on Oscar fave for Best Picture, star Freida Pinto has gone from “who?” to white hot in the space of six short months. As fashion A.D.D. sets in after an endless march of one-shoulder gowns, the model-turned actress has stepped into the role of fashion darling with aplomb, dominating the pressure-cooker of the industry’s most intense period of Oscar campaigning and red carpet appearances like a pro.
Aside from a few meh dresses that were more Mall of America than movie star, Freida has been consistently awesome, going stiletto toe-to-toe with award season veterans like Vicky Cristina Barcelona star Penelope Cruz (don’t think your charming accent has distracted us from the fact that your style rut is as big as the Grand Canyon, missy), Rachel Getting Married’s Anne Hathaway and The Reader star Kate Winslet. Stylists, take note.

The newbie certainly dressed the part of an Oscar winner at the BAFTA awards in a pretty in pink Oscar de la Renta gown that’s very reminiscent of the dress Gwyneth Paltrow wore when she claimed the best actress statue for Shakespeare in Love. A bit of foreshadowing, perhaps?

Everything’s coming up roses for Freida, quite literally, who wore a black Chanel dress with floral embellishment at the neckline to the Elle Style Awards. We’re not wild about the see-through plastic yoke used to keep the 1-800-FLOWERS bouquet in place but her “damn the recession, I want those shoes!” more than make up for that minor quibble.

She wowed in a daring mustard yellow Christian Lacroix dress (are we the only ones that hear AbFab’s Edina Monsoon saying “Lacroix, dahling. It’s Lacroix” whenever you hear that name?) at the Golden Globes, with ankle-wrap silver heels. The Fashion Police were divided on the fug or fab factor, but only someone with her glorious skin could make that hard-to-wear color work. Her stylist, George Kotsiopoulos, often takes her homeland as inspiration, choosing draped and one-shouldered looks and jewelry from Indian designers.

Freida was simply heavenly at the SAGs in a cornflower-blue Marchesa number that made us go “Ooooooh, pretty,” out loud. Looking at it, we totally had a My Fair Lady moment and “could have danced all night,” just to see it twirl. Angelina Jolie and her backwards Max Azria dress totally stole Freida’s thunder but this was definitely a Cinderella moment dress.

At the Directors Guild of America Awards, the brunette beauty was flawless in a metallic one-shoulder Zac Posen dress that is sexy without being salacious and on-trend without being a repeat of the Grecian silhouette that has become as regular on the red carpet as Paris Hilton. She paired the dress with matching peep-toes. Head-to-toe perfection.
Our fingers are crossed that her agent is busy looking for Freida’s next feature film. Selfishly, we don’t want her to turn into a pumpkin at the end of the Oscars and disappear from our glamour-hungry gaze. Otherwise, we’ll be left with the likes of Lindsay Lohan and . . . Bai Ling. Oye vay.
