Penelope Cruz’ Perfectly Meh Red Carpet Season

We’re Not Exactly Sold On Celebrity-Designer’s LBD & Black Heels Fixation

OK, we admit that we don’t know what the heck Vicky Cristina Barcelona star Penelope Cruz is saying half the time.  Generally we’re more interested in what she’s wearing than the words that are coming out of her mouth, but lately, something has been getting lost in translation.  Come se dice, “style rut as large as Angelina Jolie’s growing brood?”

The Oscar nominee is undeniably gorgeous and usually at the top of the style list come awards season, but this year her wardrobe wattage has been less than stellar, wearing a Ground Hog Day-like procession of LBDs and black heels to nearly every event.

Honestly, it’s like dressing down is the new dressing up.   We can just imagine some junior Hollywood executive issuing a memo:  “Dear starlets, your multi-million dollar paydays and team of stylists aside, as a show of solidarity in these Sucky Economic Times, it might be a good idea to dial down the over-the-topness.  What about lowering ticket prices, you say? Phew.  Now, that’s just silly talk.”

Which of these things is not like the other?  Penelope wore a haltered black Azzedine Alaida gown to the BAFTAs that is almost an exact copy of the one she wore to the SAG Awards.

She opts for a lace gown for another red carpet event from go-to designer Oscar de la Renta and . . . oh, sorry.  We must have nodded off for a moment there.

Now we’re not knocking the power of the LBD and a chic little black heel.  They are every fashionista’s best friends.  But when you have the cojones to turn a style staple from stale to smokin’, we expect a little more.

Penelope models one of the flirty black dresses from her limited collection for Spanish clothing giant Mango, which she designs with her equally genetically blessed little sister, Monica.  What, was this little number in the laundry or something?

In the Oscar prediction derby, our money is on Penelope to embrace a gown by Mr. O (maybe the subtle sartorical nod will influence her chances of claiming a win), like this one suggested by fellow red carpet style watchers at Slaves to Fashion.

Paired with these stunning ‘Natalia’ sandals from Elie Tahari, we’d totally be willing to overlook a niggling little fact like lack of color.
