OMFG: Blake Lively Lands Feb Cover of Vogue

Anna’s Pick Sparks Gossip:  Does the CW Cable Star Deserve the Plumb Pub Get?

Rumors have been swirling for months that Vogue’s head style maven Anna Wintour is on the hot seat to turn around lagging newsstand sales or face forced retirement.  Attempts to boost interest with celebrity star power from the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow and Kiera Knightley (well, the less said about that the better) were bust, though  Jennifer Aniston and the tabloidy headline “What Angie Did Was Very Uncool” garnered much better buzz.  Up next to rescue the prestigious pub: Gossip Girl’s Queen B, Blake Lively.  Already some are saying that the fashion bible’s “stooping” to put a basic cable girl on its cover is a sure sign of the impending apocalypse.

The CW star graces the cover of the February issue sporting an Old Hollywood glamour look under the bold banner:  The Gossip Girl’s New Look + More Magical Makeovers. Finally, a socialite we know and care about, even if Blake only plays one on TV.  But it does beg the question:  Do tweens even read Vogue or do they just think it’s some song by Madonna?  And we don’t imagine that the hoity toity  ”ladies who lunch” that are among mag’s core audience even know what the CW is. They probably think it stands for “carat weight.”  Anyway, Blake’s makeover is less “magical” and more thanks to glamour guru Mario Testino and a team of hair, make-up and wardrobe people.

Still, after a less than stellar appearance at the Golden Globes, the cover is a great bounce for Blake.  Bragging that she didn’t use a stylist, she walked the red carpet in a blue Nina Ricci gown that looked a bit department store dated.  Not that there’s anything empirically wrong with it; it’s a pretty cut, a dazzling fabric, and a lovely cool blue.  But there must have been something else in wardrobe that she could have grabbed instead.  And as much as we love a nude pump to make your legs look like they go on for days, the dress just screams out for a strappy little silver sandal.

Strappy sandals, like these Johnathan Kayne silver, Swarovski crystal-encrusted heels are a glamorous silhouette for any special occasion. Available at ShoeCompare.com.
