Mary-Kate Olsen, former child star, designer and full-time fashion icon, seems have dialed down her clothing kookiness to near normal levels while in the eye of the media storm over refusing to speak to police about the death of Heath Ledger. Now that she’s off the hook, our fingers are crossed that her inner muse will return to confound and amaze (but more likely confound) us with her wild and wacky ways.

Olsen’s cover and photo spread in this month’s Elle UK demonstrates why dissecting every ensemble she wears is practically an Olympic sport. Feast your eyes on the vertiginous wedges she’s working. It’s like fashion meets engineering. She’s posing all “down and out” because she probably can’t stand up or walk in them, but mobility is not the point of high heels. That’s why taxis were invented. We imagine Victoria Beckham working out with ankle weights to avoid a Naomi Campbell-like face plant when she tips down the red carpet wearing these skyscrapers.
