Mama Mia! Brit Rapper M.I.A. Is A M.OM.

Delivers Baby Boy Days After Labor Intensive Grammy Performance

Brit rapper M.IA. announced the birth of a baby boy on her MySpace page on Saturday. She welcomed the new addition just days after delivering possibly one of the best red carpet moments and performances at the Grammy Awards EVER–she showed up on her actual due date.

Not letting a minor thing like possible water-breakage slow her down, the pocketsize “Paper Planes” hit-maker wobbled down the red carpet in the world’s most stylish comforter, which she  color-coordinated with Gola by Christian Lacroix sneakers.  Of course. Maybe she got the sartorial idea to DIY an outfit from those late-night Snuggie commercials (we’re almost convinced that our life wouldn’t be complete without one.  In royal blue).  All kinds of kudos for daring to wear something other than sweatpants and flip-flops when the last time you actually saw your feet was a distant memory, but still, it’s a whole lot of look.

Her on-stage ensemble was predictably just as zany. The heavily pregnant singer rocked the mic in a super-tight Henry Holland mesh mini with strategically placed polka-dot patches and white tennies. We’re dying to see if Project Runway alum Christian Siriano’s maternity line, Fierce Mamas, can one-up this getup.

Part maternity wear crossed with Minnie Mouse’s dotted dubs and Demi Moore’s bared baby bump on the cover of Vanity Fair circa 1991, she had more swagger than her stage partners Kanye West, Jay-Z, T.I. and Lil Wayne. Seriously, they didn’t spend nine months growing a human being and hit the stage one sneeze away from delivery! Reportedly, mama-M.I.A.-to-be started having contractions soon after her performance. Holy Gerber! Her bundle of joy will probably die of embarrassment on the playground when he gets older but, honestly, she should have gotten an award for just sheer audacity (get it, “sheer” . . . ). Boy, we can just imagine what she’ll wear to mommy-and-me playgroups.

The big question now is whether M.I.A. will be M.I.A. for next week’s Oscars, where she’s scheduled to perform the Best Song nominee “O Saya” from Slumdog Millionaire.  While an Oscar date seems unlikely, we wouldn’t put it past her to turn up, baby and bassinet in tow.
