Hedonistic Hip Hop Meets High Fashion

Calling all Kanye-Junkies: Kanye West for Louis Vuitton will debut Fall 2008. The collaboration between the rapper and the luxury label will take the venerable brand in a brave new direction, capitalizing on the success of LV’s darling art world celebrity designer, Takashi Murakami. It’s one big “love-in” of intersecting talent as Murakami recently worked on design elements for Kanye’s album, Graduation. This KW/LV co-branding is the result of a long courtship, pre-dating the days when Kanye dubbed himself the “Louis Vuitton Don”, decorating his crib with classic LV steamer trunks.

Kanye’s certainly the most high-profile hip hop icon to embrace old money, luxury label brands. He’s gone one step further by cultivating “A Gentleman’s Style” all his own, modernizing and democratizing it at the same time. Poised on the vanguard of dressing, Kanye is not easily categorized. In one media hit he’s shirtless with leather pants and chains, very street - in an appearance the next day, he’s in a bespoke suit few could afford.     Great idea! Maybe Kanye can do a line of toothpicks next….or maybe coming soon: Louis Vuitton at Walmart!!, or Louis Vuitton Fried Chicken!!
