How to Rock the Venice Red Carpet

Charlize Theron in Roger Vivier Black Patent Trident Sandals

Three rules of footwear greatness have emerged from the Venice Film Festival thus far. To be a red-carpet winner, you must:

A) Wear strappy metallic shoes, or…
B) Wear a gown that covers your feet completely, or…
C) Be Charlize Theron.

If possible, be all of the above.

Let’s start with A, shall we?

Claire Danes best showed off the strappy metallic trend at the Valentino: The Last Emperor VIP Screening. By daring to show some leg, she stood out among her peers (who all seemed to get the floor-sweeping memo).

Which leads us to B….

The other gorgeous gals at the Valentino screening most likely donned similar shiny shoes. It’s hard to tell, really, as fabric bunched at the floor, pooling around their stilletos. Diane Kruger, the queen of Venice’s red carpets, hinted at a metallic gem under her stunning Valentino gown. How we wish we had such Euro style. With Joshua Jackson to go home to. But we digress.

Elizabeth Hurley defied age and gravity in her long gown. Get ready to let down your hems, ladies

And then there’s Charlize. And while she followed the long dress with metallic sandals pattern at the premiere of The Burning Plain, she opted for dramatic side-buckled Roger Viviers with her plum gown at the Valentino screening. And because the shoes were so amazing, she wore them again at the photocall for The Burning Plain the next day. With vibrant pink. Very economical fashion decision, the double-dipping in the fantastic-shoe pool. And very worth it.

So if you’re not Charlize, you have two options. Cover up and/or go strappy. Check out these sandals. Available in gold, mercury and bronze, you can pick your metallic sheen of choice. Or pretend you’re Charlize (as the great ones often do) and wear statement Roger Viviers with fall’s bold colors.

Add a couple Italian lessons for good measure and you’re a Venetian goddess. Bellissimo!
