Breaking: Michelle Obama’s Inaugural Outfit — One Down, One to Go

Michelle Obama ascended to the role of First Lady in a stately chic outfit that was sartorially a symbol of celebration and dignity of the historic moment.

Fashionistas weren’t the only ones curious about what she would wear. Designers of labels big and small were hoping for the J. Crew effect as she promoed her outfit in pictures that will be shown the world over.  But as with her inaugural dress, she kept the pick hush-hush.

Mrs. O stepped out in a golden-yellow brocade dress with embellishment around the neckline and a matching coat, with contrasting green gloves and “Glacier” pumps by Jimmy Choo. WWD reports that the look is from Cuban-born designer, Isabel Toledo.

“We’re levitating - we really are,” Ruben Toledo said minutes after watching Michelle Obama on CNN in an ensemble by his wife Isabel. The husband-wife team tuned in surrounded by their staff in their Broadway showroom.

The soon-to-be First Lady did not tip her hand in any way. “We had no idea. We hoped she would wear something because she has bought Isabel’s clothes before. We never know what’s going to happen,” he said.

“It’s just another shock, but a great shock.”

Washington Post fashion reporter Robin Givhan explains that Toledo’s business is very small, and she doesn’t advertise because it’s beyond her budget. Before Michelle’s fist-bump of approval,  Toledo’s name was known well within the design industry, but not much outside of it. Now she’s as good as Thakoon-ized.

Used to the icy Chicago temps, the First Lady went out with no hat, gloves or ear muffs.  As she did at the chilly “We Are One” concert, clearly she’s ready to take on the cold — and her new role — in style.

Fashion has returned to the White House.

Michelle isn’t afraid of color.  Heels like these “Masala” pumps by J. Renee can pop an outfit from classic to contemporary chic.
