Ashanti: When Great Shoes Happen to Bad Outfits

Rihanna + Pussycat Dolls + Alicia Keys = Yeah, Not So Much

To quote Project Runway’s Tim Gunn: “This is a lot of look, Ashanti”.

The R&B/pop singer seems to be hoochie-ing it up to drum up attention for her new album, The Declaration. Ok, so it works for the Pussycat Dolls, but they got their start as a burlesque troupe so you pretty much expect them to be sluttified all the time. Frankly, she would have been better to follow Macy Gray’s example from the Grammys and just worn a shirt that says: Buy my record. This is a style backslide on par with Katie Holmes’ obsessive love for baggy, pegged jeans. What happened to the grown up style she was cultivating in vintage couture and Marchesa dresses?

Separately, her black and lace pieces might be lovely - the shoes in particular are aggressively sexy which kind of goes with the liquid leggings’ rocker-dominatrix vibe. But together, it’s not an outfit, it’s a Halloween costume. If Ashanti applied the same great taste for shoes to her clothes, she’d be much better off. And so would our retinas.

We strongly suggest Ashanti’s stylist pick up a pair of Jonathan Kelsey’s killer heels to rehabilitate their client’s street cred.
