Gee, Rachel Zoe Makes It Look So Easy . . .

After the breathless hype and sartorial promise that Vogue’s editor, the formidable and heavily-banged Anna Wintour, would be styling “Chasing Pavements” singer Adele for the red carpet, our fingers were crossed for a style extravaganza like nothing seen outside the tents at Bryant Park.  The thought of Anna and Andre Leon Tally snipping over Evian and canapés in Vogue HQ over whose star is best dressed was simply too heady by far.

Adele, who tends to rock a 50s/60s vibe in keeping with her Motown sound, looked . . . nice in a simple, black Mad Men-like dress and Roger Vivier flats.  Not bad, but from the manicured hands of the Devil Wears Prada herself it’s a bit meh. And from the look on Adele’s face she’s having a “THIS?!  This is the best the Overlordess of Fashion could come up with?” moment, too.  So points to the giant in the caftan.  At least Jennifer Hudson’s Oscar look was interesting.

The British chanteuse, who claimed awards for Best New Artist  and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, is set to grace the pages of Vogue’s annual “we don’t hate people who aren’t a size-zero; we just don’t like to show them in our magazine except in this self-congratulatory issue” Shape Issue.  Since the issue is to celebrate woman of all sizes, we’re a bit perplexed that Anna would outfit Adele in what is essentially a figure-obliterating sack.  With a belt.  Because cinching anything makes it fashion-y.  Let’s hope Anna has better stylists on staff for Adele’s fash mag debut.  In the meantime, we suggest she have her people call Queen Latifah’s people or J. Hud’s people to show her how a girl with knockout curves should rock the red carpet.
